Holy Education, Batman!

Hi. I'm Cerissa and I'm an education junkie!

But I wasn't always. I've always been confident, but as a young stylist I thought I knew everything I needed to know to be a successful stylist. And boy oh boy was I ever WRONG!!! My older and wiser self has learned that successful people don't stop learning just because they graduated. They keep learning. And learning. And learning some more.

I'll admit that my addiction to education started slowly. It was always fun to travel out of state to go to a class or a show, especially when going with fellow stylists. But it wasn't until I decided to become an educator myself that I realized just how out of touch I was. The "know-it-all" chip on my shoulder just had to go if I wanted to be a great educator, and it was then that I fell in love with learning.

I'm sitting here writing this blog at nearly 10pm after spending all day juggling spending time with my toddler, doing my chores, not forgetting to eat, and studying. It's been a long day, but somehow I just can't pull myself away from all of this new information I'm getting! Right now I'm enrolled in not one, but two online courses. And they couldn't be more different from each other if they tried. The only common factor is that they are both exclusively for hair stylists and salon professionals.

The first I wrote about in my previous blog: Master Color Expert. I'm part of the first class of professionals to take this course entirely online, and those who know me know how much I love to be a trailblazer! I've been a stylist for 14(ish) years and was a hair color educator for a major brand, but I still felt that I wanted to have this certification under my belt. I started the first module today and already have a stack of print outs an inch tall and brain fog like nobody's business! I have two more sections to read through and watch in this module, as well as a mannequin test, a model test, and an online multiple choice test for this module and two more after it. Whoa. Hello Overwhelming, it's (not so) nice to meet you!

The second course I'm in is more like a coaching course. It's a year long program called Thriver's Society. Each month we get a new module to work on, and it happens that my sixth module became available today. I'm not even really sure how to explain what this course is other than it's focused on the business side of salon life, rather than the practical skills. I was drawn to it because I know there's so much more I can bring to the table as a stylist other than my ability to "do good hair," and I really felt like this set up, as well as the community it provides, resonated with me on a personal level. I've been through a lot in my career; many ups and downs, and it's refreshing to know I'm not alone...and that there's someone out there that can help cheer me on through the ups and coach me through the downs. It's been amazing so far, and I can't wait to see where the rest of the year will lead!

And on that note, the brain-fog and crossed eyes are officially setting in. I should sleep before my kid wakes me up early tomorrow morning. Until next time, my friends! Thanks for reading!
